"Our SUP fundamentals courses are designed to provide you with the complete set of stand up paddle skills which lie at the core of all stand up paddling disciplines”.
Just like our full day course, our weekly Core SUP Skills Series is designed to provide you with the complete slate of skills that lie at the core of all stand up paddle disciplines from recreational cruising to fitness training, whitewater, surfing, downwind , touring or racing.
Our weekly Series is spread out into short sessions over 4 weeks giving you information in bite-sized pieces while giving us lots of time to give you great instruction and personalized feedback! It’s a great way to learn and you will have plenty of time in between sessions to put your new found knowledge into action on your own stand up paddle adventures. Don’t skip your fundamentals - if you want to get better at any type of stand up paddling, start here!
The Core SUP Skills Weekly Series is intended for those stand up paddlers with some previous experience who have taken our SUP Primer or another introductory course and want to enhance their skills a bit at a time over several weeks. You should be familiar with launching and landing your board, paddling from a stand up position, able to paddle in a straight line, and able to turn and redirect your board to where you want to go.
Core stand up paddle skills include foot-work and ability to move around on your board; draw, sweep and pivot turns; bracing, paddling in wind and waves and, most fundamentally, an efficient and effective forward stroke. If you are not familiar or competent with this set of skills, then this is where you should start!
Please note that the course does not include personal clothing or gear, food, or travel – please see our Gear and Clothing tab.
Course Cancellation: It is rare that we cancel a session due to weather considerations however we will do so if, in our judgement, the conditions are dangerous or are likely to present a poor learning environment.
We will meet at the Rundle Forebay in Canmore at the gravel pullout directly across from the entrance to the Nordic Center. See Map.
Course start time: TBA. Please arrive about 15 minutes early, so that you are unloaded, changed, and ready to begin at the start time. Arriving late will cut into your instructional time, and that of others on the course.
Please note that there are no washrooms, or change facilities at the site. The nearest washrooms are across the road at the Nordic center.
We suggest that you bring high energy snacks and drink with you. On cool days we especially recommend bringing a thermos with a hot drink.
